Father's Day
I was checking out Tammy's Scrappin' With Tammy blog and she gave me the idea to share a photo of my dad. Of course, I think he is the most handsome man in the world. These photos were taken about 45 years ago. The photos were not in the best condition when they were scanned to me so I did what I could with cleaning them up, don't look too closely. He has been gone since 1984. He died of lung cancer just two days after my birthday. My mother, my father, my grandfather and a great uncle all died of lung cancer and my dad's sister is a lung cancer survivor. No, I don't smoke and I resent anyone smoking around me. Anyway, my dad was such a sweetheart. All the children in the neighborhood called him dad or daddy. I have 5 sisters and we were all talking about what made daddy so special and we all thought that we were his favorite. Now tell me that isn't a special person who can make all 6 of his girls think that each one of us was his favorite. Since my mom had passed away in 1981 and I was pregnant with my first in 1984 I used to call him and ask his advice. Who better to ask than someone who had fathered 6 girls. My dad, Robert Lawrence Stubbs, was born in Colorado Springs, CO in 1920. He lived in Council Grove, Kansas before his parents moved to DC. His Grandfather was the 18th governor of Kansas, from 1910 to 1913 - Walter Roscoe Stubbs. His dad opened two Lincoln Mercury dealerships in Maryland, where he worked after he served in the army when I was just a wee tyke. My grandfather, Walter Roscoe Stubbs Jr. - Rock, was 6'4", my grandmother was only 4'11", my dad was kind of on the short side at about 5'8" and 4 of my sisters are 5'2" or shorter. One sister, the baby, is about 5'5". Boy would I have liked to have been taller. It is so embarrassing to have to ask a perfect stranger to reach something for you at the grocery store. My parents were married for 34 years and got divorced, after 4 years of that they realized they were meant only for each other and renewed their vows in the church. It was only a few months later that my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer.
That's the story of my dad.
Ya know, I keep meaning to scrap these photos. One of these days, I will have to do that.
Thanks for tuning in.

Leslie,
ReplyDeleteI agree, your Dad was a handsome man. I'm glad I inspired you to post a photo of him. I know I miss my Dad a lot, too, but at least we will always have our memories of them.
Happy Scrappin'
Tammy
